#6. Demolition & Haul Away

Once the layout plans are prepared, the permit is pulled, the design is finalized, and the materials are selected, the construction stage of your project can begin. For homeowners, demolition is usually the first step that makes the remodel feel “real.” The bathroom is no longer just being planned — it is now officially under construction. Your old bathroom is carefully taken apart and the space is prepared for everything new.

Bathroom demolition may look simple from the outside, but it is an important step that needs to be handled with care. Every bathroom contains plumbing, electrical, tile, waterproofing layers, fixtures, walls, flooring, and sometimes hidden conditions behind the surfaces. Proper demolition navigates all the systems correctly, protects the rest of your home, and prepares the space for your new bathroom.

Careful Bathroom Demolition

Demolition is not just “breaking things.” It is a controlled process. Very important that old bathroom materials are removed in the right order, surrounding areas are protected, and the space is prepared for the next stages of work. Depending on your project, demolition may include removing tile, flooring, vanity, shower or tub, toilet, old drywall, outdated fixtures, cabinets, mirrors, and other existing finishes.

During this step, we also get a clearer look at what is behind the walls and under the floor. In older Bay Area homes, it is not unusual to discover outdated plumbing, water damage, framing issues, improper previous work, or other hidden conditions that could not be fully seen before demolition.

The goal is to remove what needs to be removed while keeping the process as clean, safe, and organized as possible.

What Homeowners Should Expect

It is important to prepare and understand that this part of the project involves noise, dust, debris, and temporary disruption. At RISE GC we approach the demolition with utmost respect to the home, and always take additional steps to reduce the disruption. We also help you understand what to expect, how the space will be accessed, and how the work area will be handled.

A well-managed demolition phase helps protect your home, reduce the mess, and keep the project moving forward with confidence.

Haul Away & Construction Debris Requirements

After the old bathroom materials are removed, the debris needs to be hauled away properly.

Construction debris is not handled the same way as regular household trash. Many Bay Area cities have specific rules for construction and demolition debris, including recycling requirements, approved facilities, weight tickets, waste management plans, and documentation.

For example, San Jose requires certain permit holders to create a Waste Management Plan through its Waste Tracking San José system, powered by Green Halo, and upload weight tickets as the project progresses. Palo Alto’s C&D debris diversion process also uses Green Halo documentation, including debris weight tags and compliance review. Santa Clara requires applicants to create a Waste Management Plan and obtain a project tracking number through the city’s online C&D tracking tool before permit issuance. Sunnyvale provides construction waste requirements and debris box instructions, including city contacts for ordering construction containers and Green Halo questions.

Working with experienced local contractor, you don’t have to worry about every rule and requirement. Because construction debris rules can vary from city to city, it helps to work with a contractor who understands how Bay Area remodeling projects are actually handled in practice.

Preparing the Space for What Comes Next

Demolition is the transition from old to new.

Once the old bathroom is removed and the debris is hauled away, the space is ready for the most important “behind-the-wall” works stage: framing, plumbing, electrical, waterproofing and everything that supports a long-lasting bathroom remodel, ensures your home is safe and your bathroom is ready for your family’s everyday practical use.
