For many families, the kitchen is the center of everyday life. It is where meals are prepared, conversations happen, kids do homework, guests naturally gather, and everyday routines begin and end.
In this new construction home, the kitchen, dining room, and living room were designed as one open, bright, connected space. The result is a comfortable open-concept area that works well for quiet family evenings, dinners with friends, and larger gatherings.
The kitchen design included a large peninsula with bar seating, an electric cooktop and oven, contemporary gray cabinets with soft-close systems, smart storage features, wood-look wall accents, a 4-inch quartz backsplash, and durable Calacatta-style quartz countertops.
But a beautiful kitchen does not start with cabinets and countertops. It starts much earlier, with layout planning, rough plumbing, electrical work, ventilation, inspections, and dozens of small decisions that need to be made before the walls are closed.
Kitchen Building Process Step by Step
A kitchen is one of the most technical spaces in a home. It combines plumbing, electrical, mechanical ventilation, appliances, storage, lighting, and finish design all in one area. Electrical planning is critical, as kitchen usually needs more power than any other room in the house. Plan for countertop appliances, dishwasher, disposal, microwave, refrigerator, range/oven, hood, under-cabinet lighting, island outlets, and future appliances.
That is why the planning stage is so important. Before rough work begins, the homeowner and contractor should confirm the actual kitchen layout, appliance locations, cabinet plan, sink and dishwasher placement, range hood location, lighting plan, island or peninsula design, countertop material, backsplash concept, and storage needs.
This is also the right time to think practically: where will the coffee machine go, where will small appliances be stored, how many outlets are needed, where will the trash pull-out be, where will large pots and pans go, and how will the family actually move through the space every day?
In the previous stages of our new Home Construction Process, we already covered architectural plans and permits, framing, rough plumbing, rough electrical, mechanical work, insulation, and the required city inspections that happened at every one of these stages, before the walls were closed. Our kitchen was the part of these processes. the plans were prepared and submitted as a part of house plans, before construction. All rough stages were completed together with the rest of the house, and inspections passed. In our case, at this point of the construction process, the hidden systems inside the walls have been inspected and approved, insulation has been completed where required, and the walls are ready for finishes. But remember, that:
In kitchen remodels, kitchen additions, and standalone kitchen projects rough MEP inspections are triggered and need to be passed separately. Framing and insulation inspections might be triggered as well if the project requires layout changes.
What Was Done During the Kitchen Rough-In Stage
Once the layout is confirmed, the rough-in stage begins. This is when the hidden systems are installed before drywall and finishes.
Plumbing Rough-In
Kitchen plumbing may include the sink drain, hot and cold water supply lines, dishwasher connection, refrigerator ice-maker line, garbage disposal, pot filler if included, and drain or vent changes.
If the sink is located in an island or peninsula, plumbing and venting need to be planned especially carefully. These details are not visible in the finished kitchen, but they are critical for proper function and inspection approval.
Electrical Rough-In
Modern kitchens need much more electrical planning than older kitchens. A proper electrical plan should account for countertop outlets, island or peninsula outlets, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, disposal, oven, cooktop, range hood, under-cabinet lighting, ceiling lighting, pendant lighting, and future appliances.
This is one of the most important moments for homeowners to slow down and think through daily use. A kitchen can look beautiful, but if outlets are missing in the right places or lighting is poorly planned, it can become frustrating to use every day.
*Gas Rough-In (If Applicable)
If your kitchen includes a gas range or cooktop, the gas line, shutoff valve, connector location, appliance clearance, and pressure testing need to be coordinated before finishes are installed.
Mechanical Ventilation and Range Hood Planning
Kitchen ventilation should be planned before cabinets and finishes. The range hood is not just a design feature. It affects duct routing, exterior termination, sound level, cabinet layout, soffits, make-up air considerations, and code compliance.
A very practical advice: do not choose a powerful range hood only because it sounds better on paper. Higher CFM is not always better if the ducting, exterior route, and make-up air are not planned accordingly. The range, hood, duct route, and cabinet design should be coordinated together.
Full List of Kitchen Inspections
Before drywall covers the walls, the city inspector checks the work that will soon be hidden. Depending on the city and project scope, this may include rough framing, rough plumbing, rough electrical, rough mechanical, gas line testing, and ventilation inspections.
Some Bay Area cities combine several items into one inspection, often called All Trades, All Frame and Rough, or a similar name. Other cities separate inspections by trade.
For a kitchen, inspections may include:
- Rough framing or structural inspection, if walls, beams, openings, or structural elements were changed.
- Rough plumbing inspection for water lines, drain/waste/vent piping, sink, dishwasher, refrigerator water line, and testing.
- Gas line inspection or pressure test, if gas piping is added, relocated, or modified.
- Rough electrical inspection for wiring, outlets, switches, lighting, appliance circuits, panel labeling, and required protection.
- Rough mechanical inspection for the range hood, ducting, termination, and kitchen exhaust.
- Insulation inspection, if exterior walls or ceilings were opened.
- Drywall or gypsum board inspection, when required, before taping, mudding, texture, or finish coverings.
- Final inspection after the kitchen is complete.
The exact inspection names and sequence vary by city, so the approved permit documents and local building department requirements should always be taken into account when planning timelines.
Cabinets and Countertops Installation
Cabinets need to be installed level, plumb, square, and properly secured. The cabinet layout must match the selected appliances, sink, countertops, and finish details.
Before installation, it is important to confirm:
- The refrigerator opening matches the actual refrigerator model.
- The range, cooktop, oven, and microwave openings match appliance specifications.
- The dishwasher space remains correct after flooring and countertops are installed.
- The sink base aligns with plumbing.
- Fillers are planned so cabinet doors and drawers can open properly near walls.
- Island or peninsula cabinets are properly anchored.
- Cabinet hardware does not interfere with appliances or adjacent cabinets.
A common mistake is designing cabinets around “standard” appliance sizes instead of the actual appliance specification sheets. For a smoother project, the appliance models should be selected before cabinet orders and rough-in work are finalized.
Countertop Template, Fabrication, and Installation
Countertops are usually templated after the base cabinets are installed. The fabricator measures the real installed cabinets, sink location, appliance openings, seams, overhangs, backsplash conditions, and wall conditions.
This is why countertop installation usually cannot happen immediately after cabinet delivery. There is normally a template and fabrication period before installation.
Quartz is a popular choice for kitchens because it offers a clean, high-end look with strong everyday durability. Calacatta-style quartz is especially popular for homeowners who like the elegant look of marble but want a lower-maintenance material for daily use.

Backsplash and Finish Surfaces
Backsplash is usually installed after countertops. Before installation, the tile layout, grout color, edge details, outlet locations, under-cabinet lighting, and transitions around cabinets and the range hood should be reviewed.
One helpful homeowner tip: backsplash tile can look different in daylight, under-cabinet lighting, and warm evening lighting. If possible, check samples in the actual kitchen before making the final decision.
Finish Plumbing, Electrical, Appliances, and Trim
After cabinets, countertops, and backsplash are in place, the finish stage begins. This is when the kitchen becomes functional.
This stage may include:
- Faucet installation.
- Sink hookup.
- Garbage disposal installation.
- Dishwasher hookup.
- Refrigerator water connection.
- Range, cooktop, or oven installation.
- Range hood installation.
- Outlet and switch plates.
- Lighting fixtures.
- Under-cabinet lighting.
- Appliance testing.
- Cabinet hardware.
- Trim, caulking, and touch-ups.
At this point, the kitchen should not only look finished. Everything should be tested to make sure it works correctly.
Final Inspection and Project Completion
At final inspection, the city verifies that the permitted work is complete and code-compliant. Depending on the city and project scope, the contractor may also need to provide required documentation before final approval.
A professional contractor should also complete a final walkthrough with the homeowner. This includes testing appliances and fixtures, checking cabinet alignment, confirming that drawers and doors operate properly, reviewing touch-ups, cleaning the work area, and closing out the permit.

Advice for Homeowners Building a Kitchen
The best kitchen construction advice is simple: make the important decisions early.
Before rough plumbing, electrical, gas, mechanical, and cabinet work begin, homeowners should confirm the final cabinet layout, actual appliance models, range hood size, duct route, sink and dishwasher location, electrical plan, island outlet strategy, lighting plan, countertop material, backsplash design, and storage needs.
Many project delays happen when the design looks good on paper, but the real-life appliance, cabinet, or material does not fit the plan. If the refrigerator, range, hood, sink, or cabinets change after rough-in, it can affect plumbing, electrical, ventilation, countertops, and inspections.
A well-built kitchen is about planning the hidden systems correctly, choosing materials wisely, and creating a space that feels natural to use every day.
