#10. Bathrooms

Bathrooms often contain some of the most technically demanding construction work in the entire house.

This stage involved installing plumbing, electrical, ventilation components, waterproofing systems, tile finishes, vanities, toilets, tubs, accessories, and all the finishing details that transform a rough space into a comfortable and functional bathroom.

Bathrooms are exposed to moisture every single day. A beautiful bathroom may look impressive, but long-term performance depends on what is hidden beneath the finishes.

Bathroom A to Z: Complete Construction Process

A successful bathroom remodel is not just about replacing tile, vanity, fixtures, or paint. A bathroom is one of the most technically demanding rooms in the house because it involves water, drainage, electrical work, ventilation, waterproofing, inspections, finish materials, and daily practical use.

Now we’re going to share the general process of building new bathrooms in a new construction house, and we’ll illustrate this with the photos from our case in Paradise, CA.

1. Bathroom Layout & Design

Building bathroom starts with understanding the space, the homeowner’s goals, and family needs. Of course in new construction homes bathrooms designs are prepared, layouts, and architectural plans are submitted, and approved by the city way before construction begins.

Professional 2D layout plans are important documents for contractors and the city, while bathrooms designs in 3D or 360-Walkthrough formats help homeowners envision their future home better. Proper layout and designs make the project easier to coordinate between the homeowner, contractor, and city.

A clear layout plan helps everyone understand the same vision before bathroom construction begins.

2. Plumbing, Electrical and Mechanical Work

This is the stage where the hidden systems of the bathroom are installed. It may not be the most visually exciting part of the remodel, but it is the most critical.

In a bathroom, everything depends on the work you do not see: water supply lines, drain lines, shower valves, tub valves, toilet plumbing, vanity plumbing, electrical wiring, outlet locations, lighting, switch placement, exhaust fan connections, ventilation, framing coordination, fixture blocking, and code-compliant installation of all of it.

Bathrooms require rough plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and framing inspections before the walls are closed. The exact inspection requirements vary by city, permit type, and project scope.

This stage must be done carefully because mistakes hidden behind walls can and will become very expensive later. A bathroom can look beautiful on the surface but have serious problems if the plumbing, electrical, ventilation, or drainage systems are not installed correctly.

 

3. Bathroom Walls, Flooring & Waterproofing

In new construction, bathroom walls and floors must be built with moisture control in mind, especially inside showers, tub surrounds, and other wet areas. Unlike the rest of the house, these spaces are exposed to repeated steam, splashing water, and high humidity, so regular drywall and standard wall prep are not enough.

Wet-area walls are typically built with cement backer board, fiber-cement board, foam tile backer board, or another approved tile substrate, followed by taped seams and a waterproofing system before tile is installed. Cement board is water-durable, but it is not fully waterproof by itself, so a waterproof membrane is added to protect the framing behind it. Bathroom floors also require a stable tile underlayment, proper sealing around penetrations, and, in showers, a sloped waterproof shower pan or receptor that directs water toward the drain. Ventilation is also part of moisture protection: a properly installed bath fan helps remove humid air before it can damage paint, drywall, cabinetry, insulation, or framing.

Together, these layers turn a bathroom into a properly protected high-moisture space built for long-term durability.

4. Tile Installation

In many bathroom designs, tile determines the final look more than anything else.

Tile can make a bathroom feel calm, classic, modern, warm, bold, artistic, minimal, luxurious, or personal. It affects not only the style of the space, but also maintenance, durability, water resistance, and daily comfort.

Tile installation usually begins after waterproofing is completed and approved. The tile layout must be planned carefully before installation starts. This includes grout lines, cuts, corners, niches, shower walls, shower floors, bathroom floors, edges, trims, and transitions.

Good tile work requires preparation, precision, and patience. Even most beautiful tile can look disappointing if the layout is poorly planned, the cuts are uneven, the grout lines are inconsistent, or the surface underneath is not prepared properly.

This is also the stage where the homeowner begins to see the design vision come to life. The bathroom starts changing from a construction area into a finished interior space.

5. Finishes Installation & Bathroom Completion

After rough work, waterproofing, tile installation, drywall, and painting are complete, the final visible elements are installed.

This stage may include the vanity, toilet, faucets, shower fixtures, tub fixtures, lighting, mirrors, accessories, towel bars, toilet paper holder, shower glass, trim, hardware, and other final details.

Finish installation is where all earlier planning comes together. The materials list, design choices, plumbing rough-ins, electrical locations, tile layout, and fixture selections all need to align. Fixtures need to be installed correctly, accessories need to be placed at practical heights, mirrors and lighting need to work together, and the final bathroom needs to be comfortable for everyday use.

After construction is complete, the bathroom goes through final city inspection. The inspector confirms that the remodel is safe, properly finished, and code-compliant.

After all the planning, design decisions, demolition, inspections, waterproofing, drywall, paint, tile, and finish installation, the bathroom is complete — beautiful, functional, safe, and ready for real daily life.


Bathroom Tips for Homeowners

Consider your future needs, not just your current ones. Features such as curbless showers, wider doorways, and improved lighting can add long-term convenience and accessibility without significantly affecting the design. After hundreds of bathrooms completed, at RISE GC we have some tips and generally good advice you might want to consider:

#1. Invest in the Best Waterproofing System
Bad waterproofing will cause massive damage to your bathroom over time, and will require very costly reparations, including demolition of the whole bathroom. Make sure your bathrooms are made using approved backer boards, sealed seams, waterproof membranes, properly sloped shower pans, and special attention is given to detailing around niches, valves, and in the corners.

#2. Quiet Fan with Timer or Humidity Sensor
A strong but quiet bath fan makes a big difference in daily life. A timer or humidity sensor makes the fan more effective because it keeps running long enough after showers, even if someone forgets to turn it off.

#3. Built-in Bench and Niches
A built-in bench and shower niche add function, storage, and convenience without cluttering the space with shelves full of accessories later. It’s definitely not the must-have feature but it might be worth considering.

#4. Add Blocking for Future Grab Bars and Accessories
Adding wood blocking inside the walls is inexpensive during construction and extremely useful later! If you decide in the future to add grab bars, shower seats, heavy accessories, or wall-mounted fixtures – you’ll be able to do it easily, without reopening walls.

#5. Heated Floors
Radiant heated floors make the bathroom feel warmer and more comfortable, especially in bathrooms with tile floors. This upgrade is also much easier to install during new construction than later after the bathroom is finished.

#6. Better Outlet Planning, Including Bidet Outlet
Smart outlet placement makes the bathroom more practical for daily use. Homeowners should plan outlets near each vanity station, inside drawers or medicine cabinets, and near the toilet for a future bidet or smart toilet.

#7. Layered Lighting with Dimmers and Night Light
Combining ceiling lighting, mirror lighting, shower lighting, dimmers, and a soft night light makes the space more functional, comfortable, and beautiful at different times of day. This seems a small improvement but the feeling it gives is luxurious.

#8. Drawers and Storage Instead of Empty Vanity Cabinets
Vanity drawers are usually more useful than deep empty cabinets because they make everyday items easier to organize and reach. Built-in dividers, medicine cabinets, linen storage, and charging drawers can make the bathroom feel much more practical.

#9. Do a hand shower, not only a fixed showerhead
It makes it so much easier to rinse the shower, wash hair, bathe kids, clean pets, and use the shower comfortably with a bench or accessibility features.

#10. Low-Maintenance Tile and Grout Choices
Large-format tile, slab-look porcelain, and smooth surfaces can make a bathroom easier to clean. This is not only a design choice; it is a maintenance choice. Fewer grout lines usually means less scrubbing and a cleaner look over time. Good practical version could be: large-format porcelain on shower walls, properly sloped shower floor tile with good traction, epoxy or high-performance grout where appropriate, and silicone at changes of plane instead of grout.
